What can you expect from participating?
Those who participate will gain practical hands-on skills to navigate challenging behaviors presented in people living with dementia. This program focuses on understanding unmet needs, problem-solving tools, utilizing huddles for enhanced communication, and empowering participants to teach others.
For every 2 hours of participation in this course—including both virtual and in-person sessions—learners can claim 0.5 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). A total of 4.5 CEUs are available upon full participation.
Participants who complete the course will receive a pin and a Certificate of Completion from Penn State Harrisburg.
What time investment and commitment is required for this offering?
- 3 Virtual Sessions
- Once you register your facility, your frontline staff will register for a PSU account. They will use that account to log onto Canvas, Penn State's online teaching platform.
- 3 In-Person Sessions
- Scheduled based on facility availability with our Nurse Educators. This will be a combination of lecture, hands-on skills, and on-the-floor experience with residents.

Who should plan to participate?
Facilities should create a small group of staff champions, especially including frontline staff, that will plan to attend all virtual and in-person sessions. CNAs, LPNs, Dementia Champions, and those in Leadership Roles will all benefit from participating. Groups larger than 9 will be split up for the in-person portion of the training.
